Action Research on Disaster Reduction

In the pursuit of disaster reduction awareness within society, we hope to provide practical research for the improvement of disaster reduction abilities.

Important Areas of Research

DRI has proposed important research areas to be addressed in the next 30 years, from the viewpoint of disaster reduction. These themes show the concrete image of the role DRI intends to play in society through action research on disaster reduction. We work preferentially on the proposed “Important Areas of Research”, making great use of our own specialized knowledge and expertise.

Important Areas of Research

(1)Optimizing human and social responses in the initial stages of disasters
(2)Improvement of inter-organizational cooperative measures for wide-area disasters
(3)Building strategies for restoring & recovering the regional society

Promoting Joint Research Projects

In addition to conducting research on individual theme, researchers at DRI also work on joint projects.

Research theme: “Improving disaster response capability of local governments in preparation for future large-scale disasters”

Cooperating in Practical Work for Disaster Reduction

The Research Department cooperates in practical work for disaster reduction through the following projects. Each project has a very important role in accomplishing action research by understanding disaster reduction policies and the needs at the actual sites of disaster control. Each project also provides opportunity for feedback, to practical work, of the knowledge researchers have obtained through their daily research activities.

(1)Training of Disaster Management Practitioners
(2)Headquarters Assistance in Disaster Response
(3)Cooperative Work with Local Governments
