Lessons from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake

This report identifies lessons vital for any citizens of disaster-prone countries for protecting life,restoring everyday living and communuties, and preparing for potential disasters in the future.It summarizes the lessons from the viewpoint of the process which starts directly after the earthquake’s occurrence and continues through the prolonged recovery. The lessons are based on a great deal of data and resarch that has been compiled thus far and on the knowledge of those who were directly involved. They are organized in terms of goverment efforts, which have been the conventional pillar of disaster reduction management, as well as individual efforts and mutual-help efforts, whose importance were reconfirmed with the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
